Ever find a handy tool that you never knew existed, and once you find it, you can’t imagine how you lived without it before? Here’s a simple one that you might not have that can be used in SO many ways! What is it you ask…a silicone mold!

I have used mine for sticks of butter, lard, tallow, single servings of soups, leftovers, and just about everything else. They can even be baked in (up to 450 degrees in the oven) I’ve even used mine for soaps. The list is almost endless. I bought my set 8 years ago and it’s still something I use often.

Here are a few tips I’ve learned the hard way.

1) If you use molds that don’t have a wire reinforced rim inside the silicone they tend to flop…which means they can spill when you move the liquid filled mold to the freezer. To prevent this I like this set.

It’s slightly more than the traditional butter molds but for me it’s so worth it. If you are looking for the most budget friendly option, you can set the mold on a flat surface such as a cookie sheet or cutting board and set the mold with the flat surface support in the freezer until it’s firmed up.

2) Get 2…or more. I often make ghee and being able to put it all in the freezer at once is much faster than waiting for it to freeze and then pouring the next batch. Waiting for freezing is often as fun as waiting for water to boil ;)

3) Pop frozen food into a bag…or for longer storage vacuum seal…and you’re done!
